Imagine you were born into this world on the heels of a forgotten past-life mission. It is nothing more than the imprint of a dream, but one you couldn’t recall with visuals or details if your life depended on it. Even so, the mood of the dream hangs around for the rest of the day, coloring your decisions and interactions from morning til nightfall, much in the way that your past-life experiences color your current lifetime. Without our conscious awareness, that karmic imprint creates a pattern and a deep groove in our psyche. Like it or not, we all find our perpetual loops in life – those lessons we seem to keep learning over again with no hint of an end in sight.
Now imagine that somewhere deep within the realm of your current reality, there lies a hidden “cure” that offers a way out of this perpetual predicament. This cure is indeed the perfectly curated remedy for your life’s particular patterns of struggle. And yet, like all things truly worth having, the road to finding it is lined with treacherous cliffsides, all of your innermost fears and temptations, and (as if we could forget) that looping karmic magnet that pulls you back to the road you started on time and time again.
In evolutionary astrology, the South Node of the moon is the old road and the North Node of the moon is the road to the remedy. In some astrological traditions, the North Node has been called the Node of Destiny or Fate… but it only takes a few moments of practical examination before that idea completely falls apart. There is nothing fated about how we choose to respond to the endless loop just as there is nothing fated about whether or not we even become aware of our patterns or a need to respond to them at all…
Rewiring karmic habits is very much in line with the process of rewiring our psyches – it takes time, practice, and trying again even after our inevitable setbacks. If you’ve spent any quality time in psychotherapy you have probably become familiar with this process. What is assured about the North Node path is only one thing: it will not be easy.
The North Node of the moon, rather than pointing to our destiny, offers a compass to our evolving souls, something we can aspire to….an offer which we are free to accept or dismiss. The deeper we go on our journey to find “the cure”, the more we begin to realize that the this path of growth is by definition a path of hard work and self-honesty. We are stepping into uncharted territory, a land of difficulty and discomfort . At some points, if we are on course, it can feel like a state of destitution where our psychological, emotional, and spiritual skills are barren and underdeveloped. And that is exactly the point: we are here to learn something that flies in the face of our natural instincts….it is neither our destiny nor our fate that we do so.
